IceDiggers having a garage sale on players
Wed, February 3, 2010 @ 1:49PM
The Alpena IceDiggers leaving for Wisconsin may not be a done deal yet, according to owner Steve Marks and the NAHL, but the IceDiggers have begun a fire sale of their top players. The NAHL web site has a story on Jimmy McCusker getting traded to Marquette, where he is reunited with former Alpena coach Kenny Miller. McCusker has played the last four seasons in Alpena and this year is the seventh leading scorer on the team with 19 points (six goals, 13 assists). Leading scorer Ryan Timar also will be wearing a different uniform as the IceDiggers page at the league web site shows Timar not with the Wenatchee Wild. Timar, who had two assists for Alpena in its win over Motor City on Saturday, netted 15 goals and added 14 assists for the IceDigger.

Feb. 8, 2010: The Blog Entry
Mon, February 8, 2010 @ 6:20PM
To those who have read my past entries, you may have noticed a theme. Each blog has absolutely nothing to do with the others. In following that trend, I'm just going to post a few thoughts to keep "The Cubicle" up to date. The usual witty* and intelligent** one-topic posts will be back soon. *Subjective statement **Extremely subjective statement From the "things you may have missed" department: Did you hear about the Super Bowl?! The New Orleans Saints won! OK, not news by any stretch, but I was happy about the outcome. Unlike an unnamed co-worker, I have no problem with the Colts, but I wanted to see something good happen to the Saints and the city of New Orleans. I think a lot of neutral fans would feel the same way if the Lions were ever in the Super Bowl. I would probably have to miss that game, however, because I'm scheduled to participate in a snowball fight in hell.

Prepare yourself for the hype
Mon, January 25, 2010 @ 9:41PM
Are you ready for the Super Bowl? More specifically, the (over)hype of the Super Bowl? The one big downfall to the Super Bowl is all that with two weeks between the conference championships and the big game, there is way too much time for all those who cover the NFL (especially ESPN) to uncover every meaningless nugget of information. Many years the hype has surpassed the game's quality many times over, though the last several years we've had some better games. Remember all the 50-something to 20ish blowouts? The one thing the NFL has going for it that the other three sports don't have is there isn't a need for big-market teams. The ratings are going to be there regardless of which teams are in the Super Bowl (This year is the perfect example, New Orleans and Indianapolis aren't big markets at all. New Orleans isn't even in the top 50 markets). That can't be said for the other major sports. Two small market teams in baseball can spell doom for TV ratings.

A trip to Newton's Creek
Thu, February 4, 2010 @ 6:29PM
This week I did a story about a creek in Alpena that has been polluted and the actions being taken to lower the amount of toxins in it. It was a very sobering story for me, because as I was investigating the facts and photographing the warning signs that line the bank of the creek, memories of when I was a boy playing in it rushed back to me. The creek runs behind McRae Park on Alpena's north side and I lived only a few blocks away so I visited the creek from time-to-time. During the summer and fall months my friends and I used to wade through the soft flowing current in our bare feet and tormented the fish and frogs that called it home. Never in a million years did I consider that one day the water in the creek would be damaged to the point to where it could burn flesh or cause permanent injury to anyone who comes in contact with it.

Throw the Bums Out
Thu, December 31, 2009 @ 10:26AM
Guess what? Americans are fed up with politicians, government intervention and bureaucratic ineptitude. That should come as no surprise to anyone. In an Associated Press story that moved Dec. 31 about people's hope for the new year, H. June Clark, a Republican retiree in Fort Wayne, Ind., said she had little hope and in fact, would prefer for a clean slate of leadership all across America. Clark thinks the nation is headed toward socialism, and she wants a wholesale change in elected officials, no matter their party affiliation. "I think they have just destroyed our faith in government and I want them out," she said. "I don't care if we get independents, populists, whatever. I just want them out." Clark is not alone in that thinking. A recent Rasmussen poll asked Americans to choose a candidate in a generic poll that included a party that doesn't even exist - the Tea Party.

Don't miss these opportunities
Tue, January 5, 2010 @ 5:02PM
January is one of those months when it's nice to just hole up in the warmth of home. All the holiday hoopla is but a memory and the frigid winter weather has set in, so a few weeks of "down time" isn't a bad thing. But choosing to stay home might mean you'd miss some great local theatre opportunities. This weekend (Jan. 9 at 1 and 6 p.m.), the Alpena High School Masquers Club is doing its annual murder mystery fundraiser at Trinity Episcopal Church. The show, "Murder at Rutherford House," is an interactive whodunit performed by high school students. It also features plenty of food and fun. All the money raised from the event goes back into the high school drama program, which like many other school extracurriculars, has been hard hit by funding cuts at Alpena Public Schools. If you are interested in attending and supporting these kids, call 884-2075 for reservations. Opening Ja.
