Oh Give Me a Home, With Heat...
March 8, 2012 - Steve Schulwitz
My hat is off to the people in northern Michigan who have endured being without electricity since the early hours of Saturday. It is approaching a week since the wet, heavy snow and high winds punished trees and utility poles in the region, leaving thousands without power. Those of you who have toughed it out, I give you two thumbs up.
If I were put in the same situation, you can bet I would have been holed up in a hotel or as a last resort, moved Andrea, the kids and myself into my parents' house until service was restored. If their house was also without juice, you can bet friends and relatives who had power would have been getting unexpected house guests.
I am too dependent on appliances and tech gadgets to have weathered the power outage for any real length of time. That is not to mention being without several other things I find very important – heat and refrigeration.
I feel for the people who didn't have an option but to bundle up and wait for the power crews to restore power. I feel even worse for the seniors who were faced with the same challenges.
I think it is also important to note the hard work the utility workers in the field have done and the extreme conditions they are having to overcome. In some cases, electricity has been restored, just to have another tree fall to wipe out the progress made. They are doing their best.
People have been saying this has been a mild winter with limited snowfall, but I bet the people who had to weather the unintended results of Mother Nature's wrath last weekend would disagree with that assertion now.
