The Tables are Turned
March 12, 2012 - Diane Speer
An awful lots of folks in the Alpena area know and love Nancy Smithem. For years, she has poured her considerable energies into championing many benefits and causes such as the Muscular Dystrophy Association and Shelter, Inc.
Nancy has always been a person who knows how to make the right connections and get things done. She's also brought countless community events and activities into the limelight through her ongoing television program, Talk of the Town, broadcast on Alpena's local station, WBKB. She is an individual who truly loves her community and has continuously made a difference in that community.
Now the tables are being turned. The community has a chance to say "thanks" and give a little bit back to Smithem and her husband, Jim, who for the past eight years has been battling prostate cancer. Jim is now at a critical point in his treatments. He and Nancy are incurring a number of expenses due to his treatments not covered by insurance and because of Jim's inability to continue working.
In their honor, a Cheeseburgers in Paradise Dinner has been planned for this Sunday, March 18 from noon-6 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall. The fundraising event, catered by Fresh Palate, features a Jimmy Buffett theme, a silent auction, Chinese raffle and 50/50 drawing.
Anyone who wants to make a monetary donation may drop it off at the Besser Credit Union. Auction items can be dropped off at Michigan Works, Real Estate One or Statewide Realty. Tickets to the event can be purchased at Alpena Agency, Besser Credit Union and Fresh Palate.
Alpena always is such a generous community. Here's another opportunity to prove it again by coming out in support of a person who has made it one of her life's missions to help raise funds and awareness for others.
