A Long Overdue Thank You...
April 13, 2012 - Steve Schulwitz
The newsroom is going to undergo a large change. Only this time it is going to have a much larger impact on me than most other personnel moves in the past. On Monday, longtime sports editor Chris Dobrowolski, whom I called boss while reporting as a stringer for the sports department, is saying goodbye as he has accepted a job in Traverse City. Yes you read that right, Traverse City. When I was made aware of the new job and his impending departure, I was quite frankly taken aback and a little saddened. Not only do I consider Chris a good friend, but a mentor in the field of reporting. Trust me, having to edit my writing, particularly in my earlier days at The News, was a chore, and not only did Chris show faith in me by allowing me to cover more events, but recommended me for the full-time beat reporter position when one became available. In other words, he, and others who are still employed at The News, played a large role in where I am today in terms of my career. It is because of his faith and confidence in me that makes his departing harder for me than what I probably show in the office. I'm not sure if I have ever thanked him for helping to convince those above him to take a chance on this work-in-progress reporter, but thank you Chris. It has been a pleasure working for you and alongside you. Traverse City is lucky to have you and your family in its community, and you will be missed not only in Alpena, but by the entire sports community in Northeast Michigan. Take care, and keep a chair open for me at Buffalo Wild Wings for when I visit!
