Roll up your sleeve - please
December 3, 2012 - Bill Speer
The need for blood is never ending, but there definitely are periods of each year when the need spikes. One of those is around the Christmas and New Years holidays.
Naturally people are more than a bit preoccupied that time of year, thus contributions of blood tend to drop off in the period between Thanksgiving and New Years. With less people making donations, Red Cross officials quickly see in a very real perspective the economic concept of "supply and demand" that every teenager learns in junior high.
Thus, blood, particularly your blood, is in high demand right now. And, that is where you come into this story. On Friday, Dec. 28, the media of Northeast Michigan (The Alpena News, WATZ, True North Radio and WBKB-TV will co-sponsor with the Alpena Mall a media blood drive. From 10 a.m. until 3:45 p.m. you are encouraged to donate blood and in the process, cast a vote for your favorite media source.
Hopefully The Alpena News would garner your vote, but really, that's not what is important here. The important thing is to gather your blood to help re-stock blood supplies across the state.
Appointments are requested to help reduce any waiting periods, but walk-ins also will be welcomed that day. To schedule an appointment, call 1-800-RED CROSS.
For more information on the blood drive, stop by The Alpena News front office at 130 Park Place.
