Speer has served as editor of The News since 1988, then editor and publisher since 1991. He's won numerous writing and editing awards from press associations and wire services in West Virginia, Ohio and Michigan. Speer has led or been a board member of countless community service organizations and coached youth sports for years. His wife Diane joins him at the Alpena News each day, where she serves as lifestyles editor. His oldest son Jeremy, is editor at the Gaylord Herald Times while youngest son Andrew, a graduate student at Central Michigan University, has worked in the summers in the newspaper's circulation departments. In addition to his community service activities in Alpena, currently he is a board member of the Michigan Press Association and a past president of the Michigan League of Home Dailies.
