The Alpena Community College volleyball team is feeling fortunate to even have a team this season. After starting the year with only six players, the Lumberjacks now boast a roster of nine, meaning the team’s season doesn’t figure to be in peril if a player gets injured. “I’m not as nervous about someone rolling an ankle, or if something happens during warmups,” said ACC head coach Kim Weiland. “Still, we can’t afford to lose any of them.” For the 2008 season Alpena features only two returning players from last year in setter Emily Schwedler and middle hitter/outside hitter Serena Green. Schwedler, from Oscoda, was ACC’s setter for a few games last season. Green, from Onaway, was a key player for the Lumberjacks and a freshman and figures to be the team’s leader on the floor as the squad’s captain. “Serena is a phenomenal outside hitter,” said Weiland. “But I had to move her to the middle because we have no height. (Former ACC player) Kayla Nowak has been working with her.
