Museum transfers archival collection to library

Besser Museum Director Janet Smoak, left, and Alpena County Library Director Judi Stillion, right, along with library staff members Marlo Broad and Bob Lyngos, look over some historial photographs and papers recently transferred from the museum to the library.
Both the Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan and Alpena County Library have long been a repository for historical papers and photographs. A formal agreement finalized last week between the two institutions has paved the way for all such materials to be housed together under one roof at the library. Doing so will make the materials easily accessible for anyone doing historical or family research. Because of limited funding and staff, the Besser Museum has never been able to fully process and index its archival materials and make them usuable to the public. The library, on the other hand, has a secure funding source and staff members specialized in the preservation and care of archival materials. “Since I’ve been at the museum, especially in the early days, I would have about two families a month come in asking for items, but I couldn’t find them for the fact that they hadn’t ever been processed,” said Museum Director Janet Smoak.
