Editorial: Stupak stays true to his convictions
Few of us have much respect for politicians these days.
Yet to lump all politicians in that same basket of "discontent" would be wrong, as now and again a politician will remind us of the job we sent them forth to do with our vote in the first place.
U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak is one such example of a politician willing to risk power and clout to instead stand firm in a conviction he feels strongly about. Stupak last week put his fellow House Democrats on notice that he was uncomfortable about language remaining in the health care reform bill concerning federal funding for abortion and until it was removed, he couldn't support the bill.
With the Obama administration needing every vote it can garner in support of the legislation, losing a Democrat like Stupak would be hard for party leaders to accept.
Stupak understands a stand such as his might ultimately lose him a committee assignment or support for legislation he is after. That's OK, as some things are worth standing firm for, and Stupak believes the sanctity of life is one of those.
"It's been my position for 20 years," Stupak said in an Alpena News story last week. "I've always been a right-to-life Democrat."
We respect those convictions and happen to agree with them. Even if we didn't, however, we'd still respect Stupak for taking a stand against what would have been popular.
It's nice to know conviction isn't a lost quality in D.C. after all.

aqua..Major Nidel Hasan was so controled by his allah god dependency that he killed a dozen people. Bart Stupak is so controlled by his jesus god dependency that real people are dying while he dithers. There is no straw man here. You are playing make believe again. Life begins before conception. Dead sperm cells dont swim all that well. Try biology 101 and get back with us rational people.

No doubt that abortion is a form of birth control for unexpected or unwanted pregnancy, and women have a set amount of time to terminate to it. Persons who are not capable and lack the resources to raise children should have an abortion and even encouraged to do so. Just as anyone who wants children, that have the resources, should be encourage to do so. Birth control should be easily available to all persons wanting it. Time to get real, how many people really want a pregnancy every time they have some fun.

Amos57: You should have tossed Hitler in there for some added clueless and miss the point by a mile. Grab some of that government cheese you find so superior, do a web search for strawman and get back to us. Surefoot: Believing that life starts at conception is not necessarily a religious belief. Unless pregnancy is endangering the life of the mother, it isn't a health care issue it's birth control.

mr speer.. Recently a muslin at Ft Hood "stood firm in a conviction he feels strongly about" and sanctimoniously put his irrational belief about the Allah god thingy over his country. Somehow I can't bring myself to respect Mr Stupack's sanctimonious behavior of putting his silly religious ideations ahead of his party and his country either. How many real people die each day because of no health care. The pen can be mightier than the sword.

All the while jobs are leaving the state he represents and its residents go on relief. His mission in life to stop all women from having an abortion and to make them beg for health care.
