Editorial: Group of kids an inspiration for everyone

August 26, 2011
The Alpena News

Hats off, or rather, perhaps we should shed our shoes, to a group of sixth grade students who this summer gathered shoes for the Soles4Souls program.

The seven students collected 600 pairs of shoes for the program, which distributes "gently used" shoes to less fortunate people around the world.

Reading their story in Friday's newspaper was inspirational to us, and we commend the seven and their families for the zeal and dedication each put forth. Other groups, businesses and churches around the community heard of the project, and aided the students in their quest as well.

We're confident none of the seven students lacked for fun activities to do this summer. As they enjoyed time with friends and family, however, they also were on a mission to do their part to make this world a little smaller.

In that process the students learned that generosity is a wonderful feeling, and that by giving, the giver also receives so much more in return.

Stories like this are too good to ignore.

To each of the seven, we speak on behalf of the entire community when we say "Thank you! Each of you is an awesome example of service above self."
