News this week that the Alpena County Sheriff Department has been approved to continue security services at the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center is much welcomed.
The department had to bid on continuation of the contract for the service, which will extend through 2016, and amounts to nearly $6 million for Alpena County.
In these days of reduced state and federal funding, managers and elected officials often are forced to look for new and creative ways to deal with budget issues. Sheriff Steve Kieliszewski has done just that ever since becoming sheriff, as evidence by this security contract.
Thanks to Kieliszewski's pursuit of this revenue, and with the support of commissioners, the sheriff department has been able to maintain personnel and equipment.
It is the kind of innovative thinking that needs to take place everywhere these days.
Sheriff Kieliszewski has shown us it can be done. We need to use that example as inspiration for other areas as well.
