Since 1899 The Alpena News has been the most trusted news source for residents of Northeast Michigan.
For the latest news, sports, features or opinions, residents of Alpena, Alcona, Montmorency and Presque Isle counties have, for decades, turned to The News for their information.
Over the years the newspaper has gone through many changes and modifications, each designed to provide readers with even more news, and make delivery of that information all the easier. Whether on newsprint or digitally delivered, most residents don't begin their day without first looking at their daily newspaper.
"As such, I'm pleased to announce this morning a new innovation that makes delivery of our news product even easier - a mobile app for the iPhone," News Publisher Bill Speer said. "This new and exciting app, which is being offered free for consumers, is especially designed to reach readers on the go."
Users of the new iPhone app will receive breaking news alerts, the day's top stories and sports stories and features on local residents doing extraordinary things. In addition, they will be able to vote on newspaper polls and search for articles previously published.
Speer said in the months ahead the app will be modified to accommodate other mobile phone software systems.
The huge popularity of the Apple iPhone and iPad pushed the newspaper to develop the app for them first, Speer said. The combined traffic that thealpenanews.com website gets from the two devices is far more than from all other mobile devices combined.
The app can be downloaded, at no charge, through the iPhone App Store or by scanning the QR code included with advertisements promoting the new service now running in the newspaper. In addition, any time the newspaper's website is visited by someone using a device running the Apple OS system, they will automatically trigger a screen urging them to download the app.
