MANISTIQUE-The Onaway girls volleyball team earned a little taste of history by sweeping Crystal Falls Forest Lake in three games. They now move on to the state finals in Battle Creek.
This victory makes the 2012 Cardinals one of only three Onaway teams of any sport to make it to the state finals.
Onaway head coach Steve Watson understood the gravity of the situation.
"It's a big deal. The girls said they wanted to make history and this is their chance," he said.
Onaway had a typically strong night against Crystal Falls Forest Lake, never allowing their opponents to score more than 20 points per game. The first game was a 25-17 victory for the Cardinals.
The second game was 25-10 while the third game was 25-13.
The Onaway girls put up some impressive numbers on the night.
Mariah Ehrke had nine kills, three aces, 11 digs and one block. Devin Bristley had eight kills, four aces and 16 digs.
Megan Estep continued her strong play by contributing 14 big assists, eight digs and a block.
Sarah Fullerton had a diverse night, contributing both offensively and defensively. She had four kills, four digs, two aces and two blocks.
Meagan Self also contributed four kills. Lexi Szymoniak and Emily Estep were also a big help defensively contributing eight kills and four kills respectively.
Onaway travels to?Battle Creek on Thursday to play in the championships on Friday at 2:00 p.m.
Watson credited his girls for an excellent season as and pondered the "epic"?nature of his team's success.
"We have a big chance to continue our epic season. Right now, there's only four teams left in the state.?And we're one of them,' he said.
