Posen’s Korynn Hincka (44) shoots while being defended by Alcona’s Lilly Manning, left and Karina Cole during a girls basketball at Posen High School on Monday.

POSEN-Posen coach Karl Momrik talks often of how junior center Korynn Hincka possesses the ability to take over a game at any time.

It didn't take Hincka very long to do that this season.

Hincka scored 38 points and the Posen girls basketball team opened the 2012-13 season with a 68-38 win over Alcona Monday at Posen High School.

Anna Couture added 16 points for the Vikings (1-0), who led 38-18 at the half and stayed ahead comfortably the entire game.

Hincka scored 14 points in the first quarter alone and had 20 by halftime. She attributed her success to her teammates who did a good job of getting her the ball inside.

"It was great to get out here again. I definitely couldn't have done anything without the team," Hincka said. "They are amazing and they got me the ball where I needed it and I couldn't ask for anything more."

Whatever jitters the Vikings may have had entering Monday's game went out the door quickly. Hincka powered Posen in the first quarter and the Vikings led 22-10 at the end of the period.

Karina Cole led Alcona with 22 points, but the Tigers (0-1) had no answer for Hincka who moved easily past defenders to score inside and outside. Cole found an offensive groove late in the third quarter, but by then the game was out of reach.

"It kind of put an exclamation point on that we are young. We had no answer for Korynn, she was dominant today," Alcona coach Brad Cole said. "We'll be ok, it's just a matter of gelling and now and figuring out what it's going to take to get our team to play together."

Aside from Hincka, the Vikings also got a solid performance from Couture, who did a good job distributing the ball, but also drove the lane and made contact.

"Anna played a great game. She had some great drives and she drew a lot of contact and she had a great passing performance," Hincka said.

Already well into double figures at the half, Hincka got hot again in the third quarter, finishing the period with 12 points. Posen outscored Alcona 14-7 in the fourth quarter and 16-13 in the third period.

Cole led off the third quarter with a three-pointer and caught fire late in the period, scoring her team's last three baskets of the quarter and last 13 points of the game.

Posen coach Karl Momrik was pleased to open the season with a win, noting that the Vikings did a good job with the full-court press on defense and distributed the ball well.

"We've been scrimmaging hard and practicing hard. We were here a long time yesterday because we wanted to make sure we were ready," Momrik said. "We got the ball inside to Korynn and she did a heck of a job for us. A lot of girls did a lot to get her the ball inside."

Alcona's JV team defeated Posen 40-29. Tori Harmo led the Tigers with 12 points and Amy Buczkowski led Posen with nine points.

Posen plays Mio on Friday.
