County budget ready for public scruntiny

November 27, 2012
The Alpena News

ALPENA - The Alpena County 2013 budget is balanced and will be put on display to the public on Friday. Treasurer Joelyn McCallum made a tweak to the budget by adding money to the sheriff department overtime line item since she reported to the Alpena County Finance Committee last week.

Sheriff Steve Kieliszewski requested $35,000 for overtime costs for correction officers. After averaging out the overtime costs from the last five years the increase to the line was made and the finished budget is now $8,428,844 or about $14,000 more than what McCallum had reported during the finance meeting. McCallum said she worked with Clerk Bonnie Friedrich closely in figuring out if the sheriff's requested amount was accurate and after crunching numbers determined it was.

"If you look at the last five years we probably should have budgeted ($30,000 or $31,000)," McCallum said. "We did a study of the last five years and threw out the highest and lowest amounts, took the average of the other three and that was at about the $21,000 mark and then looked to where they are this year so far and it is closer to the ($35,000), so we put it back in."

The budget will be on display in the treasurer and clerk's office, before being the subject of a public hearing on Dec. 27. After the public hearing the commissioners will vote to ratify the budget.
