I have to say I was startled to read in "Viewpoint," Nov 21, 2012, of the Alpena News editorial page, just how uniformed the editor can be sometimes. Does he really think the Social Security employees actually "go home" at 3 p.m.?
The idea of this change was to give what few employees who have not been replaced in the last several years (retirement, death, etc.) about two hours a day to do the follow up paperwork involved after "interviewing" the first 6 hours of the day. Under previous conditions when the manpower at offices was maintained there was enough workers to stagger the interviews and get all the paperwork attended to.
To leave the offices open to the public all day as the editor suggests would lead to a "backlog" of paperwork that in future editorials would be called "shortsighted."
