A small crowd gathers outside the steps of Alpena City Hall on Friday for a candlelight vigil in memory of the victims of a school shooting in Newtown, Conn. Twenty-one-year-old Alpena resident Nicole Betterly organized the event by setting up a Facebook page and contacting local media agencies. When she called for a moment of silence at 8 p.m., she said she was surprised by the turnout. “It was such a heartwrenching thing, and I think because it was children, I just couldn’t get it out of my mind,” she said. “It’s the simplest kind of gesture you can do, but just trying to be there for (the victims).”
