Alpena wrestling team goes 1-4 at Saginaw Swan Valley duals

SAGINAW-The Alpena wrestling team dropped its first four matches at the Saginaw Swan Valley team duals on Saturday, but ended the day with a win.

The Wildcats lost to L'Anse Creuse North (56-21), Swan Valley (71-12), Byron (48-22) and Ogemaw Heights (72-4) before beating Saginaw 30-14.

"Our guys wrestled tough and we continue to get better individually, but we just haven't had our full lineup healthy yet," Alpena coach Jake Stenz said.

Danielle Weeks was 2-2 for the Wildcats, wrestling at 119 and 125 pounds; Connor Day was 3-2 at 135 pounds; RJ Centala was 3-2 wrestling at 145 and 152 pounds; Austin Weeks was 2-0 at 215 pounds and Aleco Hantzis was 4-0 at heavyweight.

Alpena will wrestle at Birch Run on Wednesday.

4 RC wrestlers place at Marquette Challenge

MARQUETTE-The Rogers City wrestling team took ninth place out of 20 teams and had four wrestlers place at the Marquette Challenge on Saturday.

Placing for the Hurons were Jacob Sobeck who took second place at 125 pounds; Evan Lamb who took third place at 140 pounds; Caleb Pommerenke who took third place at 189 pounds and Justin Saile who took fourth place at 103 pounds.


Lowe and Kollien qualify for indoor track state championships.

Elaine Lowe and Christina Kollien of The Woods Track Club, both broke club records while qualifying for the 2013 State indoor track championships. Lowe qualified in the 3200 meter run with a time of 11:53. She also broke the 1600 meter club record, running a 5:40.

In her first-ever indoor meet, Kollien ran a 9.66 in the 60 meter hurdles.

Tellis Donajkowski also represented The Woods, running both the 1600 and 3200. The Woods' next meet will be held at Central Michigan University on Jan 5.
