ALPENA - The American Red Cross blood drive was held at the Alpena Mall Friday, and Gary Maddox of the American Red Cross said it was another successful day for the community.

"This is a very giving community, everyone should be proud," Maddox said. "Every time we go to Alpena is just awesome. There is always a need for blood, but the donors are so important. God bless them, without their charity we wouldn't get anything done."

Tom Kullik of the Red Cross said 41 units of blood was the projected gain from the blood drive on Friday, which will be shipped downstate for processing and then sent to hospitals.

The American Red Cross held it annual media blood drive on Friday at the Alpena Mall. The Red Cross set a goal of 41 units for the event.

"We'll probably hit 41 units. We've been steady all day. It's been a really good day," Kullik said. "The blood usually stays in Michigan. Unless there is an emergency, it'll stay local. A lot of it goes right to Alpena Regional Medical Center."

George Gillewald, volunteering with the Optimist Club, said all of the club members have been volunteering at Alpena blood drives for the past several years.

"We take people after they give blood, and give them cookies and something to drink. We'll watch them for about 15 minutes to make sure they're doing OK and are safe to drive," Gillewald said. "This is the fourth time I've volunteered here, but all of the club members love doing it and donating their time. You meet a lot of nice people here too."

The next Red Cross blood drive will be held in Alpena on Monday, at St. Mary's from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
