Whether it was on a baseball diamond, on a gym mat, on the basketball court or on a football field, athletic success seemed to follow DickBehning, Mike Kollien, John Geddert and Andy Rohn.

Each of member of that quartet excelled in a different sport and their accomplishments were recognized after they were chosen as the 2012 class of the Alpena Sports Hall of Fame Monday at Press Night at the Alpena Boosters Club.

They will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at a banquet on May 4 at the APlex.

Behning earned nine letters at Alpena High School, but made his mark in football. He received a scholarship to the University of Wyoming and helped the Cowboys win three Skyline Championships under coach Bob Devaney. He was later invited to pro tryouts with the Denver Broncos and New York Giants.

He earned honorable mention all-state in football as a Wildcat, but Hall of Fame President Gary Mischley said Behning never quite got the recognition he deserved.

"We who know him knew how good he was. He's a class guy," Mischley said.

Rohn becomes the third member of his family to be chosen for the Hall of Fame. Rohn's father, Bob was part of the 1990 class and his brother Dan was part of the 1995 class.

Before he came to Alpena High, Rohn was a member of two state champion youth baseball teams, winning titles with the 1977 Huron Shore All-Star Little League team and the 1979 Babe Ruth team. As a Wildcat he earned three letters before moving on to Central Michigan where he played four years. As a Chippewa he was part of four Mid-American Conference championship teams, earned first team all-conference honors twice and was team MVP in 1986. He was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 27th round of the MLB Draft in 1987, but his career was shorted by injuries.

"Andy's awfully excited, his brothers are excited and I'm so proud," Rohn's mother Janet said.

Geddert was a co-captain for the Alpena gymnastics team as a senior and won three letters at Alpena. After graduating from Central Michigan, Geddert moved into coaching and has since made his mark at state, national and international levels. Geddert has coached over 40 national champions and his teams have compiled more state titles than all other teams combined. He was the head coach for the U.S. at the 2011 World Championships where his student, Jordyn Wieber was named best all-around gymnast. Geddert's coaching career reached a pinnacle last summer when he was named the head coach for the women's gymnastics team for the 2012 Olympic Games in London and coached the US to its second-ever team gold medal. Wieber was one of five gymnasts on the squad that made up the "Fierce Five" and combined for four individual medals.

"He was very honored to be nominated. John is not only a fantastic coach, he's also a fantastic person," Geddert's brother Wayne Bates said.

Kollien was one of Alpena's High greatest all-around basketball players and left the school as the school as the third all-time leading scorer in school history, a mark that still stands. He was a three-time MVP for the Wildcats and scored 945 points in his career. From there he went to Alpena Community College where he finished his two-year career among the leading scorers in school history. He was also two-time all-conference selection. He finished his college career at Concordia College and set a school record his senior year, making 63 percent of his shots and finishing among the country's top players in shooting percentage. He was also named team MVP and later College Athlete of the Year.

Kollien joked that since it was his fourth year on the ballot, the Hall of Fame selection committee finally decided to let him in.

"I considered myself a 6-4 Northern Michigan white guy who couldn't jump, but made the most of my abilities," Kollien said.
