Posen’s Hincka on the verge of setting record

To say there's a lot to watch for in tonight's girls basketball between Hillman and Posen is an understatement.

Posen (13-0, 8-0 North Star League) is the top team in the North Star League entering tonight's game and Hillman (7-4, 7-1 NSL) is No. 2, only a game behind the Vikings.

If that isn't enough to make the game a must-see, Posen junior Korynn Hincka is only 30 points away from breaking Posen's career point record.

"Korynn gets around 29 to 30 points a game, so there's a big chance she could break that record in the fourth quarter of the game. She's been so humble about the whole thing. She wasn't even aware of how close she was to breaking the record until we told her," Posen coach Karl Momrik said.

The current record is held by Lisa Wekwert and stands at 1,393 points. Hincka has 1,364 going into tonight's game and leads the area with 29.3 points a game and 13.9 rebounds a game.

The two teams will meet tonight at Hillman High School at 7:30 p.m.

In spite of Hincka's looming record, Momrik doesn't believe one player makes a team.

"There are so many kids on our team that do the little things like Jenna Hincka, Ashley Meyers, Anna Couture, you name it. Korynn is our big offensive scorer but it's a whole team effort out there every night," he said.

Posen has established itself as one of the top teams in the area and holds a 42-game win streak against North Star League opponents.

Hillman's head coach John Kuzewski isn't letting that phase his team however.

"If anything, it's making our focus more heightened. Posen is the top team in the league and probably one of the top five teams in the state (in class D). We're getting anxious and ready to play and get started," he said.

Hillman has a relatively young team this year with only a few players that have much experience against Posen. Morgan Hardies and Jensen Tchorzynski are two of Hillman's top players that will have to jump into leadership positions against Posen.

Momrik isn't taking his team's winning streak for granted against Hillman and said the Vikings will have to focus on shutting down Hardies and Tchorzynski.

"They've definitely got our attention this year. They've only got one league loss this year. It's a big rivalry between Hillman and Posen and it'll definitely be an exciting game," he said.

"We're going to have to zero in on Jensen and Morgan and shut them down. Morgan is an excellent post player that picks up a lot of rebounds and points. And Jensen just gets better every year we play against her."

Tchorzynski is third in the area with 14.3 points per game while Hardies is fourth in the area for rebounds with 8.3 per game while averaging 11.9 points per game.

Kuzewski is also well aware of Posen's talent and said it will take a full-team effort to hand the Vikings a loss.

"From what I've seen, this team is the deepest Posen's had in the last four or five years. We'll have to be ready against their strong defensive pressure. It's hard to replicate Posen's full court press so we have to be prepared to stop that if we're going to win," he said. "We're going to have to work together as a team as well. Morgan and Jensen will have to take leadership positions to take advantage of their experience against Posen, but every girl I put out there is going to have to play strong and be patient enough to take it down court."
