The Zonta Club of Alpena recently presented Ann Diamond, Alpena Regional Medical development director, and Judy Wienczewski, Alpena Cancer Center social worker, with the net proceeds from the 2012 Zonta Walks for Women Breast Cancer Awareness Walk/5K Run.
On Oct. 6, 2012, more than 700 people gathered at the Fletcher Street Brewing Co. to participate in the annual event, which generated a total of $33,391 for the Mammography Subsidy Fund at ARMC. This represents $6,374 more than the previous year.
Penny Boldrey, chair of the event, said, "Our 2012 event was the largest ever, both in attendance and in the amount of funds we raised. We're proud to share that all of the funds raised in our community, stay in our community. We offer our heartfelt appreciation to our community, business supporters, cancer survivors, their families and friends for their tremendous support of this cause."

Partners in the event included sponsors Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union, Alpena Radiology P.C., Alpena Regional Medical Center and Stoney Acres Winery. A total of 39 area businesses lent their financial support with sponsorships ranging from $250 to $3,000.
Individuals raising the most in contributions included Julie Dietz, $1,613; Alleigh Sexton, $320; and Mary Lewandowski, $291. Individual teams raising the most in contributions included Team Marian Sauve, $1,522; Caring Michigan Hotties, $617; and Birds of a Feather, $570.
Businesses earning top fundraising honors included Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union, $3,792; Besser Credit Union, $2,625; and First Federal of Northern Michigan, $750.
Since the inception of this event in 2007, area Zontians have raised a total of $132,950 for ARMC and enhanced the breast health services for thousands of women within the hospital's five-county service area. During 2012 a total of 282 women were assisted by the Mammography Subsidy Fund.
"This event provides us with the chance to remember those who we have lost their battle to breast cancer, support those who are currently fighting this vicious disease, and to celebrate the survivors. It is also about coming together as a community to advance the cause," Boldrey said.
Plans are underway for the 2013 Zonta Walks for Women Breast Cancer Awareness Walk/5K Run which will take place Oct. 5.
