GAYLORD-The Alpena boys basketball team (9-4 overall, 5-4 Big North) travelled to Gaylord (1-12, 0-7) on Friday and took out the Blue Devils 60-44.
The first quarter saw Alpena take a 19-9 lead that head coach John Pintar believed as vital to his team's success.
"Once we got that nice 10 point lead it helped us moved confidently offensively, using our size as an advantage. They had one big guy we have at least three," he said.
The first half ended 32-23 in favor of Alpena while the third quarter ended 47- 27 with Gaylord scoring only four points.
"The defense was also big in the second half especially in that third quarter when we got that 20 point lead. That really put the game away," Pintar said.
Gaylord outscored Alpena in the fourth quarter but it was too little too late.
Luke Cordes scored 24 points for Alpena while Andy Marwede got 14. Kam Fitzek contributed nine.
Tyler Frisch of Gaylord scored 19.
The JV team won 52-51 against Gaylord with Cody Tucker knocking down 15 points. The freshman team lost 58-44 with Braedon Worth hitting 10 and Kolin Ghidoni hitting 8.
