Alpena hockey takes out Gaylord 5-4

GAYLORD-The Alpena Wildcats hockey team (11-10) traveled to Gaylord (2-16) on Friday and won a tight 5-4 match.

This win came off a 7-1 trounce of Gaylord on Thursday.

"Gaylord played a lot better Friday than they did on Thursday. Their goal keeper had a lot of good saves. Jared (Kwiatkowski) could have picked up a few more if it wasn't for those saves," head coach?Pete Doubek said.

Jared Kwiatkowski hit three goals on the night while Zach Nash and Cole Cosbitt hit a goal apiece.

Nash also picked up three assists, Kwiatkowski had an assist while Plume and Zack Rumbles picked up three a piece.

"It was tough because we lost a lot of our solid defensive players and we've had to rotate players in and out there. Gaylord also played a lot better Friday than they did on Thursday. Their goal keeper had a lot of good saves. Jared (Kwiatkowski) could have picked up a few more if it wasn't for those saves.?I'm happy with the outcome of the game.?It as a great team effort," Doubek said.


Hillman 50, Au Gres 47

AUGRES-The?Hillman Tigers (11-5, 10-3 North?Star League) faced a tough challenge against Au Gres on Saturday. They trailed for most of the game but were able to come through with a dramatic win in the last two minutes.

The first quarter saw Hillman down 14-4 after Au Gres took a 14-2 lead.

"We tightened up our defensive and went to man-to-man which we haven't played much. We kept plugging away and plugged in a basket with 10 seconds to go,"?Hillman head coach Eric Muzynski said.

The second quarter saw a big offensive push from Hillman to narrow the lead to 22-20. The third quarter saw Hillman down by seven but fight to a one point lead with two minutes left. Au Gres ended the quarter up 35-34.

The final quarter was a see-saw match that saw both teams neck and neck. With a little over a minute to play, Hillman ran a screen to give Mason VanPamel a chance to nail a three. He was fouled after sinking the shot but missed, keeping Hillman behind by one point, 47-46.

Au Gres hit the rebound and got up-court with 45 seconds to go. A Mike Olschanski steal lead to him hitting a layup. Hillman was now up 48-47.

Ty Jones then stole the ball from Au?Gres with 22 seconds left and hit a field goal to give Hillman their final score.

"That was a signature win for us. We needed something like that. A tough, come from behind road game that really shows what we're made of,"?Muzynski said.

Hillman's top scorers were VanPamel with 14 points, Hunter?Fessler with 11 and Jones with nine. Olschanki nabbed 12 rebounds.

Au Gres top scorer was Brett Mazer with 29 points.

Hillman travels to Hale tomorrow. They then travel to Onaway on Tuesday and host Rogers City for their last home game of the regular season.

Boyne?Falls 56,

Atlanta 47

ATLANTA-Despite a 21-point effort from Jake Chambers, the Atlanta boys basketball team fell to Boyne Falls 56-47 on Saturday.

Brandon Matelski and Marcus Matelski each scored 21 points for Boyne Falls, which led 16-10 after the first quarter, 27-19 at the half and 41-28 after three quarters.

Garrett Badgero added 13 points for the Huskies.
