ALPENA - There will be a community-wide cleanup on Saturday from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Resource Recovery Center on M-32. Tires, up to 10 per person, with an additional $1 per tire above 10 will be accepted. Also being accepting are old appliances, furniture, electronics, mattresses and box springs.
Stains, varnishes, cleaning solutions, construction materials, and garbage must be paid for in order to drop them off.
"Water-based and latex paints can be dried and disposed of in a regular garbage," Howard Lumsden, Long Rapids Township supervisor and chairman for the cleanup, said. "The cleanup was started to give people a way of getting rid of these kinds of items directly."
The township officers, resource recovery center crew, and city officials are all donating their time on Saturday to help with the cleanup and keep things organized.
"We enjoy doing something like this for the community," said Lumsden. "The more we can get the word out about what we're taking, the better it is for the community."
The community wide cleanup has been going on for over 10 years and is funded by the $10 per house surcharge imposed for recycling purposes. The state of Michigan also provided a $5,000 grant to dispose of the tires collected during the cleanup.
