Alpena Thunder Bay Junior High students from the UR2 Underwater Robotics Engineering Team were recognized recently and introduced at the state capitol in Lansing by State Rep. Peter Pettalia and State Sen. John Moolenaar. The students were first place winners in the regional remotely operated vehicle competition at Plaza Pool in Alpena on April 20, and now have the chance to compete in Seattle, Wash., in international ROV competition in June, representing the Great Lakes Region. The team will be competing against other regional winners from around the world.
The students have been busy fundraising to support their trip to Seattle and will be having a bottle drive today in which donations can be dropped off at Dr. David Beatty's office. They have a ROV workshop planned for June 1, at Alpena Mall from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. where they will be educating visitors on ROVs and have a VIP competition. There also will be a spaghetti dinner on June 1, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Ossineke Methodist Church on US-23 with a bake sale and Chinese raffle items in which all proceeds from tickets go to the teams travel and lodging expenses.
