ALPENA -For the 23rd year, the Long Lake Improvement Association will hold its annual Family Fishing Derby 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
"The purpose is to take your kids out fishing with you," organizer Bill Schwartz said.
But landing a big fish is still necessary if competitors want a piece of $1,000 in cash prizes or a chance at a raffle.
Adults compete in four categories: perch, pike, walleye and bass, while children 15 and under can add bluegill to the list, he said.
"To win, the bass usually run in the 20-inch class," Schwartz said. "The pike are 30 inches and your perch run around 12 to 14 inches."
The improvement association, approximately 300 members, takes care of the 5,600-acre lake and dam, monitors water clarity and stocks sport fish, he said. Families must be members in order to compete. Those who aren't can buy a family membership card for $15.
The event is headquartered at Dodge Marine & Storage, 2111 Long Lake Park Road, Schwartz said. Cards also are available at Buck's Bait & Tackle, 8501 US-23, and Parker House Restaurant, 24732 US-23, Presque Isle.
To draw more children, organizers offer refreshments, toys, even a mountain bike as incentives. A kayak also is being offered as a prize, he said.
