AHS XC competes in 45th Annual Lancer?Invitational

MIDLAND?BULLOCK?CREEK-The Alpena boys and girls cross country team ran in the 45th Annual Lancer Invitational on Saturday. The girls finished first, with 165 points. Ogemaw came in second with 163, followed by Alma with 160, Midland with 75,?Saginaw Heritage with 71,?Bay City West with 50 and Midland Dow with 41.

Kallie Dent from Midland Dow had a winning time of 18:53. Taylor?Kunath was Alpena's top finisher (23:11), followed by Brook Burrone (23:43), Hannah McDonald (23:53), Alayna Nugent (24:10), Mikayla Oliver (24:12), Lauren Heath (24:49) and Jenna Talbot (25:34).

"Four of the seven are first year runners and still trying to get into their groove. I have a lot of faith in them. They work hard and are competitive. Now we just need to pull it all together on the same day,"?cross country coach Joy Bullis said.

The boys team picked up fifth place with 94 points. Finishing first was Ogemaw with 211, followed by Mt.?Pleasant with 187,?Alma with 170, Midland Dow with 112, Alpena, Midland with 88, Auburn Bay City Western with 76 and Saginaw Heritage with 35.

Jake Morey from Alma won with a time of 16:14. Mitchell Day was Alpena's top finisher (17:10), followed by Elisha Martin (17:42), Tellis Donajkowski (17:48) and Isaac Cross (17:51). All of these racers medalled. Other Alpena finishers included RJ Centala (18:02), Nevin McHarg (18:04), and Kolin Ghidoni (18:50).

Ben Diamond and Clay Jacobs received medals for the?JV?team.

"(This team is) very well rounded! I have some great leaders here that can pass on our work ethic to the younger runners and continue to build their legacy," Bullis said.

Alpena's next meet is this Friday at Michigan State?University.

FOOTBALL

Mio 34,?Tawas Area 19

MIO-The Mio football team (1-1) made up for last week's 66-12 loss against Whittemore-Prescott by picking up a win against Tawas Area on Friday. Tawas was fresh off last week's victory over Johannesburg, but couldn't hold their own against the Thunderbolts.

Mio scored a touchdown in the first quarter, two touchdowns in the second and two in the third to pick up the win. Tawas scored two in the second and one in the third.

Quarterback Brad Rhoads was 19 for 28 for a completion percentage of 67. He picked up three passing touchdowns and 250 total passing yards.

Bryson?Devers led Mio in receiving yards, catching five and picking up 90 yards. Colton?McGregor pulled down six passes for 84 yards, while Seth Thomey snagged six for 60 yards. Josh Fox caught two passes for 16 yards.

The Thunderbolts picked up only 26 rushing yards on the night. Devers led with 16 yards on seven carries.

Devers also led defensively with eight tackles and six assists, while Scott Blamer had seven tackles and six assists.

Mio travels to Atlanta on Friday
