ONAWAY-The Onaway volleyball team (17-4-1, 1-0 Ski Valley) picked up its first Ski Valley Conference win on Tuesday against Central Lake, winning 25-10, 25-16 and 25-18.
"It feels good picking up that first conference win. We took care of the ball like I hoped, with Mariah (Ehrke) and Devin (Bristley), picking up most of our offense, with only five combined errors. That's the kind of results you want to see from your outside hitters," Onaway coach Steve Watson said.
Bristley led offensively with 11 kills, two aces and five digs. Ehrke wasn't far behind with 10 kills, four aces and 11 digs. Taylor Ehrke picked up 21 assists and six digs while Sarah Fullerton had three kills, three aces and 13 digs.
"We made a few too many service errors tonight, but I pushed them to serve tougher tonight, so it makes sense there'd be some more errors. Now, we're going to push to eliminate errors," Watson said.
Onaway also won the Rogers City Invitational on Saturday. In pool play, the Cardinals beat Cheboygan 25-21 and 25-13; Alcona 25-6 and 25-13; Johannesburg-Lewiston 25-15 and 25-12 and split with Gaylord 25-17 and 17-25.
The Cardinals were No. 1 in their pool, and moved onto the semifinals to play against Alpena. They won 25-13 and 25-23 and moved on to the finals against Rogers City. Here, they won 25-8 and 25-18.
Bristley picked up 35 kills, 10 aces and five digs. Mariah Erhke had 32 kills, nine aces, 56 digs and seven blocks while Taylor Ehrke had 79 assists and 34 digs. Lexi Szymoniak had 23 kills, 41 digs and seven blocks while Fullerton had 18 kills, four aces and 29 digs.
Onaway plays in the Petoskey Tournament on Saturday. The Cardinals are pooled with Leland, the No. 3 volleyball team in Michigan.
"It'll be great to have a chance to play against a team of that caliber. If we can pick up a win against them, it would mean a lot for our team," Watson said.
