ATLANTA - The Montmorency County Board of Commissioners approved a request from Kevin Keller, MAAO, of the equalization department to add an appraiser 1 position to the department with a beginning wage of $13.50 per hour to help alleviate the workload in the department. The new hire would need to be certified be working as the full-time office appraiser.
"The person would be going out and appraising the buildings necessary for the studies," Keller said. "Five years ago, Montmorency County equalization would have failed eMAR exam very badly ... there are still some areas that need to be looked at.
"What I'm proposing is that we create an appraiser 1 position in my office ... if we don't do it, we're going to run into a problem. I don't want this county to slide back to where it was."
Keller said the demand for assessors is high, and other areas have been raising salaries and hourly pay to attract certified people to their open position. Board Chairman Gene Thornton agreed with Keller about the new position.
"We need an appraiser in that office," Thornton said. "It's mandated that each unit, that we have an equalization department, and that each unit of government has an assessor."
The board approved adding the position with a 4-1 vote, with Daryl Peterson voting against adding the position.
