ALPENA - Alpena High School will sponsor a senior parent night tonight from 6-8 p.m. in the high school auditorium, and all parents of seniors are encouraged to attend.
"This is the first year that we've done this," parent involvement Coordinator Lee Fitzpatrick said. "We felt it was important enough to do a separate night for senior parents. We want parents and students to understand the support that is available for them for the decisions that need to be made."
During the event, parents will hear about the different requirements needed for the process of preparing for college.
"Senior year is a vital bridge for our students, from secondary education to future career and post-secondary study options," Fitzpatrick said. "It can be a very confusing time for our students and parents where high stakes decisions are made that will affect the student over the length of their life."
Parents will be provided with information regarding graduation, parent/school communications, senior year activities, transcripts, college application and selection and an introduction and update from the counseling staff.
"This important meeting allows everyone to be informed and aware of the support that is in place to assist them," Fitzpatrick said. "We want to make sure that our families have the opportunity to succeed and feel comfortable and supported in doing it."
Fitzpatrick encourages parents to contact him and the support staff anytime with questions, but said the meeting will be informational and make parents aware of the help that is there.
"There are some high stakes decisions for the kids in the next few months," he said. "We want to make sure the parents know there is someone they can call to ask questions or guide them through the process. If you can't make the meeting, call. We're always here to help."
