Alpena hockey fans can get their first look at Alpena's new junior hockey team tonight as the Alpena Street Cats open the 2013-14 season against the Bloomington (Ind.) Blaze at 7 p.m. at Northern Lights Arena.
The team will sign autographs and have a meet-and-greet session with fans after the game.
Tonight's game is the first of a three-game home series against the Blaze. Alpena will play Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
As of Wednesday, the Street Cats had 13 players on their roster, including Kam Russell, who played for Alpena High last season.
"Our style is team play and we're not a team of superstars. All of them are good players and time will tell who the superstars are," Street Cats head coach Igor Myaskovskiy said. "But it's a team sport and we'll win as a team and lose as a team."
Tonight's game marks the first game on Alpena's 42-game regular season schedule and the first of 21 home games.
Alpena went 20-24-4 in the inaugural season of the Midwest Junior Hockey League last year and is part of a seven-team league this season that includes Michigan teams in Traverse City, Berkley, Detroit and Sault Ste. Marie.
The Street Cats are Alpena's first junior hockey team since the Alpena Thunder played from 2010-11. Prior to that, the Alpena IceDiggers played in Alpena from 2005-10.
