Editorial: Awareness for one cancer, awareness for all

October 14, 2013
The Alpena News

Unless you've been living under a rock or in a cave, you are probably aware that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. But did you know that it is also National Liver Cancer Awareness Month? And, National Down Syndrome Awareness Month?

In fact, there are 19 different national designations for awareness in October. Every month has several national awareness designations except for December, which has no national designations. Of all the designations, cancer is prominent in every month.

Breast cancer awareness has received great attention through the years and the results can't be argued. Yet there is more than can and needs to be done. Awareness, like that being done on a national and local level, helps in the battle against breast cancer.

But we can't just stop at breast cancer. Look around and you can find people who have fought or are battling lung cancer, liver cancer, ovarian cancer, pancreatic cancer - the list goes on.

There isn't a person in Northeast Michigan who doesn't know someone who has been touched by cancer. As we continue this month to raise awareness for breast cancer, let us not forget there are others who are battling other types of cancer.

Every type of cancer is potentially life threatening and we must do what we can to help everyone who is battling cancer, and to support everyone who is trying to find a cure.

Let's continue to raise awareness for all cancers.
