TRAVERSE?CITY-The Alpena soccer team (8-12-1) faced Traverse City Central on Monday in the first round of district playoffs. They lost 2-0 in a game that made coach Tim Storch very proud.
"They came to Traverse City and they played a very competitive game against a very good team. I couldn't be any prouder of the way they played tonight and the improvement they've shown as a team since the beginning of the season,"?he said.
Storch pointed out the play of midfielder Giulio Fantasia, defender Dakota Knechtel and Jacob Kozlowski as particularly vital to the game, but stressed that his team played well together.
"I had one-third of my team out sick, another one-third of them were hurt and the other third were young, inexperience and some junior varsity players. For large parts of the season, we've looked like a JV team playing at a varsity level, but the returning players who played at this level at a young age will be even better next year,"?Storch said.
Goalie Gray Martin stopped 14 shots on the goal.
