Editorial: United Way passing halfway mark is good news, but more is needed

October 25, 2013
The Alpena News

If you have ever watched an NFL game on television, then you are aware of the United Way, as you can't avoid its commercials during telecasts. Chances are that you or someone you know has been been helped by the United Way, as its reach in community support is long and wide.

Earlier this week, the United Way of Northeast Michigan announced it has surpassed the 50 percent mark of its goal for the 2013-14 campaign. Six weeks into the campaign and just over $110,000 of its $215,000 goal has been met.

The United Way supports 16 different agencies, all with a goal to help people in our area. Everything from the Alpena DARE Program to the Alzheimer's Association, and the Alpena Volunteer Center to Third Level. These agencies help people in our area, and receive help from the United Way.

So it brightened our day to hear this year's campaign is more than halfway to its intended goal. But the campaign isn't over, and if you haven't had the opportunity to contribute, we urge you to so. It would be nice not only to reach the goal, but to surpass it. We're certain campaign co-chairs Mike and Barb Mahler would agree.

If you haven't yet contributed, contact the United Way at 354-2221 or stop by the office at 701 Woodward Avenue, Alpena, Every donations helps, and no donation is too small.
