Editorial: President Lincoln comes to downtown

November 8, 2013
The Alpena News

One of the greatest addresses of all time, given by one of greatest Presidents of all time, will be coming to Alpena this month.

Beginning Monday Nov. 18 and continuing through Thursday, Nov. 21, area residents will be able to join in the sesquicentennial anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.

Certainly a highlight of the event will be Nov. 19, when President Lincoln rides into town in a special parade. When the parade reaches Culligan Plaza, Lincoln will deliver his special address.

A number of other special events also will be held in conjunction with the celebration, many of which will be held at the First Congregational Church.

The idea for the event came from Dr. Greg Adamus, who is a member of the Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan's board of trustees. He presented his concept to museum officials, who agreed the idea should be implemented.

"The museum is bringing history to the people and that is the sign of a very strong museum," Adamus said.

We commend Adamus and the museum for this opportunity - one which we believe will be educational and informative for all of us.
