It was a productive weekend for the Alpena Community College women's basketball team.

The Lumberjacks easily routed the Sault Cougars on Friday and its 81-49 Saturday win brought their overall record up to 3-3 for the season.

"We've never been 500 this early. We still got a lot of work to do as a team, but this is definitely a sign of good things," ACC head coach Bobby Allen said.

The Lumberjacks didn't waste any time. Courtney Holmes nailed a three-pointer 15 seconds into the game to take a lead the Lumberjacks never lost.

Holmes' trey was one of three for the Lumberjacks in the first half. Whitney Frazier hit back-to-back threes to give ACC a 13-2 lead three minutes into the game.

ACC never trailed, but the Cougars were able to narrow the lead throughout the first half.

Brooke Bellerose and Stephanie Maki scored eight points in a two-minute stretch to come within six points of the Lumberjacks with 5:04 left in the half.

The Lumberjacks pulled away quickly in the last five minutes, by outscoring Sault 14-4. Five different players scored during this streak.

"We really worked together as a team today. It wasn't all about one player, but about focusing on teamwork and doing what we could do to win," ACC freshman Megan Barkley said.

Sault was led by McKenzie Kearns who scored 12 points in the first half and 21 total points.

ACC had four girls score double digits, including Frazier with a team-leading 13 points. Holmes had 12, while Amy Nowak had 12 and Anna Carrick had 10.

Both teams were fairly clean in the first half. ACC gave the Cougars 15 free throw attempts while taking 10 of its own. ACC was perfect from the line in the first while Sault hit only seven.

The Lumberjacks led at the half 43-27.

The second half saw increased energy from both teams. The Lumberjacks really pulled ahead during a four-minute stretch in the second half where it outscored Sault 13-2 to take a 66-42 lead. ACC clamped down on the Cougars for the rest of the half while continuing to put points on the board.

When Holmes hit her second three of the night with one second left on the clock, it was the icing on the cake of a two-game sweep.

"We really needed this win. It helps build up our confidence and bring us together as a team. And our teamwork is really what keeps us together. It doesn't matter who gets the basket as long as its a team effort," Barkley said.

ACC hosts Muskegon at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
