TRAVERSE CITY-The Alpena boys basketball team came up just short in its season opener.
Alpena missed a half court shot in the final seconds and lost to Traverse City Central 64-62 on Friday in a game that also served as its Big North Conference opener.
Alpena overcame a bad start to take a 15-13 lead after one quarter, but faltered in the second quarter. The Wildcats led by a handful of points midway through the period, but Central ultimately outscored them 21-12 and led 34-27 at the half.
"We just fell apart. We had a horrendous last 3-4 minutes of the second quarter and our bad (play) was really bad," Alpena coach John Pintar said.
Andy Marwede and Cody Tucker each scored 15 points for the Wildcats, Tyler Pintar added nine points and Nick Skiba chipped in with eight.
Alpena trailed 47-43 after three quarters and cut into the Trojans' lead in the fourth quarter, but couldn't pull even with Central after the Trojans missed a 1-and-1 with five seconds left.
Nate Schluser paced Central with 16 points.
Alpena will host Sault Ste, Marie on Monday.
Alpena's JV team lost 57-39. Austin Hemmingson led the Wildcats with 14 points and Caleb Myers added 10.
Alpena's freshman team also lost, 59-24. Alec Bell led Alpena with seven points.
Tawas 63, Alcona 37
TAWAS-The Tawas boys basketball team got the better of Alcona 63-37 on Friday.
Trenton LaVergne led Alcona with 11 points and Jason Steiner added seven.
Alcona hosts Mio on Monday.
Rogers City 14
ROGERS CITY The Posen girls basketball team stretched its North Star League win streak to 51 games on Friday in a 54-14 rout of Rogers City.
"We were just off balance a little bit tonight. Posen's a good team, but our girls played hard right to the end," Rogers City coach Gary Bisson said.
Posen started fast with a 29-4 lead in the first quarter and led 34-7 at halftime. Morgan Hall led the Hurons with five points.
Korynn Hinka led Posen with 21 points, while Ashley Meyers scored 17.
"Rogers City was minus a couple starters and we just took it to them with high-pressure defense and never looked back," Posen coach Karl Momrik said.
Rogers City JV girls basketball team defeated Posen 52-25. Jolene Reese led Posen with 16 points, while Brooke Dubie led Rogers City with 13 points.
Posen is 4-0, and 3-0 NSL. Rogers City is now 3-1 and faces Oscoda on Tuesday. Posen visits Hale on Tuesday.
Fairview 35, Mio 22
FAIRVIEW The Fairview girls basketball team consistently held a lead over Mio on Friday to pick up its second win of the season.
Fairview (2-2) led in the half 19-8 and led the rest of the way.
The Eagles continued with a lead of 27-15 over Mio in the third quarter.
Logan Winton led Fairview with 13 points.
Fairview plays at Au Gres next Tuesday.
Alcona 49, Au Gres 34
AU GRES The Alcona girls basketball team pulled away from Au Gres on Friday to pick up its third win of the season.
Alcona (3-2) led slowly in the first quarter 9-8, then picked up another 20 points to Au Gres' 10 by halftime. Alcona continued to lead 35-23 after third quarters.
Katrina Cole scored 28 points and added nine rebounds, four assists, and five steals to lead Alcona. Megan Quick scored 10 points and added six rebounds, six assists, and seven steals.
"We had a very well-rounded game tonight. We played very well against their height and our defense contributed to our offense,"Alcona coach Brad Cole said.
