ALPENA - The Boys and Girls Club of Alpena recently recceived a grant from Payless Shoes that allows the club to buy 100 active club members a new pair of shoes for $20 per pair. Program Director Jen Digna and Executive Director Brad Somers worked together to procure the grant for the second year.

"This is a huge opportunity not only for the club members, but for their families," Digna said. "This helps them get a pair of shoes so now the families can allocate that money to something else they need. The kids really enjoy picking out their new shoes. It's great that Payless is willing to coordinate with the staff and shoe availablilty for the kids."

Payless gives the club gift cards for each child, and the members get to choose the color and style of the shoe they like the most. Alpena Payless Store Manager Patti Grochowski said she loves seeing the kids come in to pick out shoes.

Chris Krause tries on different pairs of shoes at Payless Shoes on Wednesday with help from a grant the Boys and Girls Club received from Payless to offer free $20 shoes to 100 members of the Alpena club.

"We love helping the kids find shoes," Grochowski said. "It's wonderful to see them come in and get shoes and that Payless is helping in our local community. It makes you feel happy to be on the team and to be able to do it for the second year in a row."

Over the next few weeks, groups of club members will be traveling to pick out their new shoes at Payless with the help of Boys and Girls Club and Payless staffs.
