On top of their game

ROGERS CITY-There wasn't much the Rogers City boys basketball team could do to slow down Ben Lubitz or Mio on Thursday.

Lubitz scored 30 points and the Thunderbolts took control of the game right from the opening tip, going on to defeat the Hurons 85-41 at Rogers City High School.

Mio (6-1) led 22-8 after one quarter and didn't let up from there, which meant a long night for Rogers City.

Mio’s Ben Lubitz (11) scores during the second half of a boys basketball game on Thursday at Rogers City. Lubitz scored 30 points as Mio beat the Hurons 85-41.

Still after another easy win, the Thunderbolts still saw room for improvement.

"We could've played a little better, we didn't play our best game, but overall I thought we worked well as a team and got some transition points and found some things to build on," Lubitz said.

Lubitz was one of three Mio players in double figures as Seth Thomey added 14 points and Aaron Georgieff had 12.

The Hurons scored the first bucket of the second quarter, but then watched Mio put together a 16-1 run with everyone other than Lubitz doing most of the damage. The stretch put the Thunderbolts ahead 38-11 late in the period and helped send them to halftime with a 40-13 lead.

The struggles continued for Rogers City in the second half. After the Hurons first three trips down the floor in the third quarter resulted in scores, Mio seized control again. Lubitz netted 16 points in the third quarter alone and capped a late Mio run with a two-handed dunk after a pass from Thomey with 1:06 left.

Mio ended the third quarter with a 68-28 lead.

It was another oustanding performance from Lubitz, who has become Mio's go-to player as a sophomore. His last three games have seen outputs of 24, 26 and 30 points and there haven't been many teams to stop him.

"A big difference from last year is hitting the weight room. I've gotten a lot stronger, worked on my shot and ball handling," Lubitz said. "I've always been self-motivated so I work hard and I don't do it for myself, I do it for the team."

Chris Lopez led Rogers City with 13 points and Alex Hincka added 10.

Rogers City got a brief boost early in the fourth quarter after scoring the period's first eight points, but Mio's depth proved to be too much again as Georgieff, Bryson Devers, Josh Fox and Charles Auten were among those to score for Mio in the closing minutes.

That depth has carried Mio a long way earlier in the season and could yield some bigger things for the Thunderbolts as the season wears on.

"We always work hard every day and it's a bunch of great players," Lubitz said. "It's a pleasure to be on this team."

Rogers City's boys JV team defeated Mio 49-29. Josh Belusar led the Hurons with 13 points and Brendon Koss added eight points. Garrett Anderson led Mio with 15 points.
