ALPENA - The building trades career and technical education house No. 29 has been sold. The Alpena Public Schools Board of Education accepted the selling price of $215,000 from buyers Aaron Olsen and Lane Reed-Olsen Friday at a special meeting.
"We're excited to welcome them to the Wildcat Court neighborhood," Joyce McCoy, director of secondary instruction and CTE, said. "This is our second home in Wildcat Court, and it sold for really close to asking price."
Building trades students worked on the house two hours a day during school hours to put the house together project by project and finish the three bedroom, 2,000 square foot home.
"We had over 75 students work on this home, and I'm sure every student that was a part of it and hears this news will be happy that there is going to be a great family living in this home," McCoy said. "It took about 2 1/2 years to build the house."
Students in the class worked with local plumbers, builders, electricians and mechanical companies to get their jobs done. They learned masonry skills, trimming, roofing, and other jobs, big and small, that needed to be done to finish the house.
"We gave a $5,000 concession for appliances or driveways or some incidentals that we did not put in," McCoy said. "That was part of our Realtor agreement and is common. Margie Haaxma was our representative and Real Estate One was the seller."
The house has dark cherry wood cabinets and distressed hickory wood flooring, and has a composite deck on the rear of the home. McCoy said the house selling is proof the class does a great job under the guidance of teacher Jason Loyer.
"We continue to build a quality home that someone wants, and we're happy when the right buyer comes along," McCoy said. "We've already broken ground for the next home in Wildcat Court and we're already working on it."
With the district costs and fees taken into account, the district stands to have net proceeds of $197,881.24.
