Dragonfly Art Gallery in Harrisville announces Kathy Maynard as the June Artist of the Month. Her work will be on display all month and a public reception in her honor will be held June 21 from 1-4 p.m. at the gallery.
Maynard moved to Detroit from Greeneville, Tenn., in 1966. She married her husband, Ken, in 1975, and they worked and raised their family in Warren. After her husband's retirement, the couple moved in 1986 to Hubbard Lake.
She began stained glass instruction in 1990 at A Glass Act, a studio operated by Art and Judy Guren in Hubbard Lake. Starting with very small sun-catchers and moving up to panels for her own kitchen cabinets, her interest has grown over the years.
Maynard has always loved stained glass, especially a large panel of "Jesus and the Children" that graced the window of her childhood church in Tennessee. She considered it ironic that many years later she would have an opportunity to design and create a similar panel for her new home church, Ossineke United Methodist Church.
This window, along with six others, has become the largest body of her work to date. Designing and crafting the church windows was a labor of love that took about two years to complete.
She continues to design and create stained glass art pieces in her home studio, River Rest Stained Glass Studio. Maynard does commissioned works, gallery showings, unique gifts and projects for her own enjoyment. Most recently she is exploring making multi-dimensional panels and pedestaled pieces.
"I love to keep changing things up a bit," she said. "It keeps the work challenging."
Dragonfly Art Gallery is open daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. It is located at 116 E. Main.
