PIDL presents Flamenco dancers Saturday at Rogers Theater
May programs include music, speakers, plant sale, more
ROGERS CITY — Presque Isle District Library has many entertaining and educational programs planned this month, including International Dance Companeros de Flamenco at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Rogers Theater.
The lively music and dance of Spain known as the Spanish Flamenco will be a great event for the whole family. General admission is $5 per person, and students get in for free.
Celebrating History and Culture through the Arts kicks off its series with the performance of the Companeros de Flamenco Spanish dance troupe. This talented group of dancers and musicians perform Flamenco, a musical style with a rich and diverse history. The colorful costumes, compelling guitar music and the intricate footwork tell the story of Spain’s multicultural heritage. The audience will be entertained and enlightened about the history and origin of the dance. There will be opportunities for audience participation as well.
These events are made possible in part by the PIDL, Michigan Arts and Culture Council, Art in the Loft, Huron Shores Humanities Council, and the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan.
Musician Sean Gaskell May 11
On Thursday, May 11, Sean Gaskell will give a performance and an educational demonstration on the West African Kora, an ancient 21-stringed harp, at 7:30 p.m. at Rogers Theater.
His performance will feature traditional songs that are the heart and soul of the kora’s musical repertoire. Gaskell was so inspired by the music that he traveled to West Africa and studied with Moriba Kuyateh. The kora is traditionally played by oral historians known as Griots, often called Jalis. Many songs tell of war and hardship, love and loss, all while presenting the history and fabric of Mande society, of which the instrument originates. Visits to Brikama, Gambia, and West Africa provided Gaskell the opportunity to perfect his skills and talents.
Gaskell is on his U.S. tour and making his premiere performance in Rogers City. Admission is $5 per person for general admission and students age 18 and younger get in for free.
Holocaust survivor Irene Miller speaks May 18
On Thursday, May 18, at 7:30 p.m. at Rogers Theater, Irene Miller, a Holocaust survivor, author, speaker, and educator will take you on a survival journey little written and known about. You will sleep in the winter under an open sky on the no man’s land; you will freeze in a Siberian labor camp where the bears come to your door front. In Uzbekistan, you will live on boiled grass or broiled onions, and shiver with malaria. You will spend years in orphanages. When this is over, you will wonder how a child with this background grows up to become a positive, creative, accomplished woman with a joy of living and love to share. It is a story of courage, determination, perseverance and the power of the human spirit.
General admission is $5 per person. This presentation contains mature subject matter. Miller will sign copies of her book, “Into No Man’s Land: A Historical Memoir” after the program.

On Tuesday, May 16, at 3 p.m., those in grades 6 to 12 are welcome to attend Fiction Addiction Book Club in the Constance Jordan Room at the PIDL in Rogers City.
May’s book selection is “The Wind in the Willows” by Kenneth Grahame.
