‘Great Lakes Storm of 1913’ on display at library
ALPENA — The Alpena County Library presents a new exhibit, “The Great Lakes Storm of 1913,” on display in November during library hours.
Today (Nov. 6) marks the 111th anniversary of the Great Lakes Storm of 1913. The storm was the deadliest and most destructive natural disaster in recorded history to hit the Great Lakes.
The Alpena County George N. Fletcher George R. and Edith Angell Cook Special Collections Department has displayed a commemorative exhibit throughout the library. The exhibit includes photos from some of the 19 sunken ships, artifacts, and interesting facts, and features the artwork of Jim Clary, donated by Larry and Susan Hamm.
Visitors can learn how Michigan shipping and economics were impacted by this disaster and are invited to remember the 250 lives lost. Archaeologist Wayne Lusardi presented on this topic in 2013, and the lecture is available throughout the day. You can also find the presentation on the Alpena County Library’s YouTube channel.
