ALPENA — Stumped by your tech device? Alpena High School students can help you out.
Older and even middle-aged Americans know the best way to solve a computer or smartphone mystery is to ask a younger person for help. Even better, ask a tech-knowledgeable young person. The Association of Lifelong Learners (ALL) has made that connection for you.
A group of tech-savvy AHS students have been offering their skills in a successful ALL Tech Workshop sessions at Alpena Community College. If you (no matter your age) have a problem operating or setting up any electronic device, you are invited to seek help at the next workshop, from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday in room 140 of Alpena Community College’s M. Briggs Center.
These workshops are informal, walk-in consultations. Bring your laptop or tablet or phone (or desktop if you can handle it) and see if the Alpena High team can end your frustration, get past a roadblock, or help you set up a new program.
“The hum of conversation between the kids and older clients is a great side benefit,” said workshop coordinator Linda Ferguson. “Attendees leave happy with the help they receive and impressed by the students’ knowledge and helpfulness.”
The students are members of DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) doing community service to prepare them for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management.
“Our Tech Days are a great way to build relationships across generations,” said Amanda Pilarski, DECA adviser. “Working with the Lifelong Learners has been such a great experience for everyone. Our high school students have so much fun being in the teacher role. They truly understand how much impact they have by helping others, and how just a few minutes of time can make a big change in someone’s life. Every time we leave this event, our students are so excited about the next time they get to come back.”
The workshops are free of charge. Donations are accepted to help with the students’ DECA competition expenses. For further information, call the ALL office at 989-358-7207.
