Alpena helped the Salvation Army ‘love beyond Christmas’
ALPENA — The Salvation Army of Alpena reached its red kettle goal for the holiday season, thanks to the generosity of the community.
The Salvation Army of Alpena County made a call for help to give, so love could go beyond Christmas and into 2025, and the community answered. In a year of increased requests for services and a struggling economy, Alpena Salvation Army was not sure if the community would be able to step up to the increased goal. Thankfully, they were able to meet their goal and provide help to many in need. That is because of partners, donors, and tireless volunteers who stepped up despite the struggles of 2024.
The goal was $185,000 and, as of Jan. 3, the funds reached over $187,000. The funds were collected through the Salvation Army’s red kettles, mail appeal collections, local group/church fundraisers, and mail-in donations.
A big help was from the Honorary Red Kettle Chairperson Steve Jakubcin, from Cliff Anschuetz. He was the spokesperson and promoter of the programs and goal of the Army. He provided plenty of social media, radio and TV interviews, and other promotional ideas to get the word out. The $185,000 goal was reached because of his assistance. These funds will help the needs of our Alpena County neighbors in 2025. The Salvation Army would not be able to serve those in need in this county without the help of its generous partners, donors, and bellringers.
“I have stopped being surprised by the generosity of this community,” said Major Prezza Morrison. “I now know you have deep concern for your neighbors who struggle, and you are willing to sacrifice to give them the assistance they need. You are the Army.”
The Christmas toy and food distribution served 221 families, 503 children, with a total of 913 people. A total of 2,515 toys were provided to the youth. This does not include the monthly services continued in December.
As 2025 begins, The Salvation Army doors are still open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekly. They assist with utility bills, food and personal care items, clothing and household vouchers, disaster services, youth and adult programs, spiritual assistance, and more.
If you have questions, call 989-358-2769 for information concerning the Salvation Army’s programs. All funds collected after December will also be used to serve the high level of requests the Salvation Army expects to receive again this year.
Monetary donations are still accepted via mail or in person at The Salvation Army Corps Community Center at 722 N. 2nd Ave., Alpena, MI 49707, or online at salmich.org/alpena, or via telephone by calling Morrison at 989-358-2769, ext. 6513.
