ALPENA — The Kiwanis Club of Alpena held its noon meeting on Jan. 27, featuring guest speaker Joe Gentry, executive director of the United Way of Northeast Michigan. As part of his presentation of the amazing number of United Way projects, Gentry highlighted the impact of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, a program that provides free books to children from birth to age 5. His presentation aligned with the Kiwanis Club’s ongoing emphasis on children’s literacy and educational development.
The Imagination Library, a nationwide initiative, fosters early childhood literacy by mailing age-appropriate books to registered children each month. Gentry emphasized the program’s success in Northeast Michigan, where it has helped thousands of young readers build a strong foundation for learning.
In recognition of his dedication to the Alpena community, Gentry was inducted as an honorary member of the Kiwanis Club of Alpena. This distinction acknowledges his years of altruistic service and leadership in improving the lives of local residents.
Kiwanis Club President Rocky Roland praised Gentry’s contributions, stating, “Joe’s commitment to strengthening our community and promoting literacy mirrors the mission of Kiwanis. Joe has all the personal attributes we strive for in Kiwanians. We are honored to welcome him as an honorary member.”
The Kiwanis Club of Alpena continues to support initiatives that benefit children and families, reinforcing its commitment to service and education. The club meets regularly to engage with community leaders, organize service projects, and promote volunteerism throughout the region.
