ALPENA — The Alpena Figure Skating Club will present its annual show on Friday, March 7, and Saturday, March 8 at Northern Lights Arena in Alpena.

The Friday show will start at 7 p.m., and the same show will be held again at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are $8 per adult, and $5 per child, available at the door.

This year will feature nearly 80 skaters, according to Alpena Figure Skating Club Vice President Corey Cook. She said there were a little over 60 skaters last year.

The theme for this year is “Enchanted Waters.” Each group will perform to music pertaining to that theme, with costumes to coordinate with each song.

“This is our biggest fundraiser of the year,” Cook said.

She added that all the proceeds go toward making skating more affordable for families who want to get involved with the Alpena Figure Skating Club. Cook said the season starts in October, and they have their annual show each March to present the skills the skaters have learned, and to celebrate their progress over the season.

Cook said some children start figure skating as young as age 3 or 4.

“If you can walk, you can skate,” she said.

She added that there is no upper age limit for joining the Alpena Figure Skating Club.

The club has been active since the 1930s.

“The Alpena Figure Skating Club is a nonprofit organization promoting the sport of figure skating,” the AFSC website states. “Its existence can be traced back to the 1930s. The club encourages the instruction, practice, and advancement of our members in free style, moves in the field, synchronized skating and dance. We also have basic skill classes that are the building blocks for figure skating.”

The club offers group lessons for skaters of all levels.

“AFSC is affiliated with the U.S. Figure Skating Association, which is the national governing body of eligible figure skating in the United States,” the AFSC website states. “The USFS sets the standards and rules under which all member clubs operate.”

Cook encourages the community to come out and support the Alpena Figure Skating Club while enjoying an entertaining program showcasing the talents of all the skaters.

There will also be a silent auction, a multi-item raffle, a 50/50 drawing, a bake sale, and concessions. Northern Lights Arena is located at 751 Woodward Ave., Alpena. For more information about Alpena Figure Skating Club, visit their Facebook page.
