Good Mid-Day Alpena Thursday, April 10

ALPENA — The Alpena Area Chamber of Commerce will host the next Good Mid-Day Alpena on Thursday, April 10 at Art in the Loft, 109 N. 2nd Ave., Alpena.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m., followed by a program at noon. The event will feature live music, give-away packages, and a tourism-related celebration program.

The program is sponsored by the Alpena Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The cost is $12 per person and registration is required in advance to info@alpenachamber.com or 989-354-4181.

Amputee Support Group meets Thursday

ALPENA — The new Northeast Michigan Amputee Support Group will be meeting from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month at McWilliams Funeral Home, 504 W. Washington Ave., Alpena. The April meeting will be this Thursday.

Each month will feature a new topic, with guest speakers on occasion. All who are affected by limb loss are welcome. Each meeting will be helpful for the whole family (the amputee, their support person, and children). Child care will be provided. Please call ahead to register your child.

VFW scholarship opportunities offered

ALPENA — The Alpena VFW 2496 is offering two scholarship essay contests: Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy. The theme for this year is “How Are You Showing Patriotism and Support for Our Country?”

Patriot’s Pen is open to sixth, seventh and eighth grade students, with a deadline of Oct.31, 2025. Homeschooled students are also eligible. The first-place national award is currently $5,000.

The Voice of Democracy is open to students in grades nine through 12, with a deadline of Oct. 31, 2025. This includes students enrolled in home study programs. Each year, high school students compete for more than $2 million in scholarships and incentives.
