PFAS cleanup investigation to begin at Alpena base
Contractors will soon determine the best way to clean up per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, also known as PFAS, at the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center, the Michigan Department of Military and Veteran Affairs said in a news release.
The investigations will focus on collecting data to characterize site conditions, determine the nature and extent of PFAS contamination, and assess risk to human health and the environment. This information is critical for determining the most effective longterm cleanup remedies, the state said.
“The information provided by the investigations will be critical in addressing PFAS in and around the bases,” Col. James Rossi, Alpena CRTC commander, said in a statement. “We are committed to ensuring the health and safety for our Airmen, their families, our Michigan communities and the environment.”
